Chris Maynard: Jay Spray 1
2016, blue and gold macaw secondary feathers
Gerald Peters Gallery, 1005 Paseo de Peralta, 505-954-5700 Naturally shed feathers cut with eye-surgery tools and arranged into sculptural forms make up The Art of Chris Maynard at Gerald Peters Gallery. “My ideas are inspired by the birds themselves, like a flight sequence or a certain pose,” he writes. “Or they are inspired by the shape or color of a particular feather. Or they are inspired by an attribute of feathers: flight, transcendence, hope, bridges between worlds and escape. They are in our dreams. They are full of metaphor.” Maynard’s show opens in conjunction with Two Works, an invitational in which participating artists contribute two distinct works apiece, and Gwynn Murrill: Nearing Nature, an exhibit of Murrill’s sculptures. The reception for all shows is Friday, June 24, at 5 p.m.
