Pasatiempo - - RANDOM ACTS - Art,

When Marc buys an expensive, modern, all-white painting, his friend Serge judges it as ridiculous. They attempt to grapple with their differing views, asking what art is, if it’s in the eye of the beholder, where critical standards come from, and whether standards mean anything if monetary value stands in for more fundamental ideals. The ensuing argument gets progressively inane and personally vicious, threatening to rend the fabric of their 15-year camaraderie. Attempts by a third man, Ivan, to placate them only make things worse. Yasmina Reza’s now-classic 90-minute play about aesthetics and friendship, opens at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 21, as a production of the New Mexico Actors Lab at Teatro Paraguas Studios (3205-B Calle Marie, 505-424-1601), starring Robert Nott, Jonathan Richards, and Nicholas Ballas, directed by Robert Benedetti. Additional performances are Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m., through Aug. 7. Tickets, $20 with discounts available, can be purchased at www.brownpapertick — Jennifer Levin
