Pasatiempo - - RESTAURANT REVIEW - by Michael Abatemarco

Meyer Gallery, 225 Canyon Road, 505-983-1434 Milt Kobayashi’s portraits recall the painting style of the Ashcan School of the early 20th century, but his works also reflect his interest in the 16th- and 17th-century Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints that are known as “pictures of the floating world.” Kobayashi worked as an illustrator until he saw a portrait of Juan de Pareja by Spanish Baroque master Diego Velázquez in 1977 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, inspiring him to become a painter. Milt Kobayashi: Twinkle opens Friday, July 22, with a reception at 5 p.m.
