Is Alfa Valova a band or a tiny planet in the Sunflower Galaxy? The website www.alfavalova.com indicates that it is both, as well as the name of an album. The site is home to a lengthy origin story about the denizens of a planet for whom music is elemental to life, like air or water, but who over time forgot to teach their children how to create music with instruments, and now only musicnauts — a group of music mystics — retain that all-important power. If the album is any indication, the music they make is hypnotic and free of lyrics, calling to mind nature and memory and all other forms of music at once. Many familiar Santa Fe musicians play on the album, including Mark Clark, Hilary Schacht, Eric Heithaus, and Brian Wingard. Explore the mysteries of this orchestral offering at the album release party at 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 26, at Wyland Galleries of Santa Fe (202 Canyon Road, 505-795-7300). Michael Cheval, the artist who created the album’s cover image, paints in the gallery, and musicians from the album perform live. — Jennifer Levin
