Sax on the hill: Doug Lawrence and friends

Sax­o­phon­ist Doug Lawrence leads a quar­tet play­ing at the Mu­seum Hill Café, 710 Camino Lejo, on Fri­day, Aug. 26. Lawrence be­gan his ca­reer by do­ing side­man du­ties on tenor sax­o­phone, and some­times clar­inet or flute, on jazz-band record­ings by Loren Schoen­berg and Buck Clay­ton for a decade be­fore re­leas­ing his de­but CD, Soul Car­ni­val (Fa­ble), in 1997. His new­est al­bum, Night Flight, is due out this win­ter. Lawrence main­tains a zesty per­for­mance schedule; one of his an­nual gigs is a week dur­ing July at New York’s Bird­land jazz club with the Count Basie Orches­tra. His Aug. 26 con­cert, pre­sented by the Santa Fe Mu­sic Col­lec­tive, be­gins at 7 p.m. He is joined by pi­anist Bert Dal­ton, bassist Rob “Milo” Jaramillo, and drum­mer John Trenta­costa.
