Fiesta forever: Mariachi Extravaganza
If you frequent Santa Fe’s restaurants and bars, you know that in the City Different, you can listen to live mariachi music any night of the week as well at brunch on Sunday. But in early September, we hit peak mariachi season. Roving bands of musicians play outdoors at every opportunity, convincing some tourists that this is just how it is in Santa Fe, and they even enter office buildings to play for workers in celebration of Fiesta, which is definitely not something that happens every day. On Saturday, Sept. 3, the Santa Fe Fiesta Council goes all out for the traditional music of Mexico and New Mexico with Mariachi Extravaganza at the Santa Fe Opera, featuring Mariachi Las Coronelas (with special guest Antonio Reyna), Mariachi Raíces de América, and Mariachi Calor. The show starts at 7:30 p.m., and tailgating is encouraged. Tickets are $26-$61, available at www.santafeopera.org or by calling 505-986-5900. — J.L.
