Stormy weather: Ser­e­nata of Santa Fe’s Shades of Gray

Ser­e­nata of Santa Fe be­gins its sea­son with a pro­gram ti­tled Shades of Gray, ap­par­ently in­di­cat­ing that the works be­ing per­formed are not paragons of cheer­ful­ness. Vi­o­lin­ist David Fel­berg, vi­o­list Shanti Ran­dall, cel­list Sally Guen­ther, and pian­ist Yi-heng Yang join in works for pi­ano quar­tet by Gus­tav Mahler — a jour­ney­man com­po­si­tion from 1876 or 1877, dis­cov­ered after his widow’s death in a folder la­beled “Youth­ful Works” — Al­fred Sch­nit­tke, John Har­bi­son, Pavel Kar­manov, and Judith Weir. Fel­berg and Yang also per­form Schu­bert’s Sonatina in D mi­nor for Vi­o­lin and Pi­ano. The concert takes place at 3:30 p.m. on Sun­day, Sept. 11, at First Pres­by­te­rian Church, 208 Grant Ave. (Take note of that start­ing time: Orig­i­nally planned for 3 p.m., the concert now be­gins a half-hour later.)
