Across the universe: Khruangbin

Pasatiempo - - RANDOM ACTS -

The smooth yet funky surf stylings of Khruangbin go down as easy as cold lemonade on a hot summer’s day in Texas — which is where the members of this trio met, as unlikely as that might seem if you listen to their music. Khruangbin, which translates to “air engine” or “airplane” in Thai, got much of its early inspiration from Thai funk music of the 1960s. On their 2015 release, The Universe Smiles Upon You, they added lyrics to their largely instrumental repertoire. When the band sings, it is both understated and psychedelic, and the music is made for grooving. Khruangbin plays at the Meow Wolf Art Complex (1352 Rufina Circle, 505-780-4458) on Friday, Sept. 16, at 8 p.m. Tickets to the twenty-one-andover show are $12 in advance and $15 at the door, available at www.meowwolf.com. — J.L.
