Vocal acrobatics: Of Montreal

Pasatiempo - - RANDOM ACTS - — Jeff Acker

Meow Wolf has been bringing big names in indie rock to Santa Fe, with two recent booking coups — Deerhunter earlier this month and Of Montreal on Wednesday, Oct. 26. Of Montreal is actually of Georgia (specifically, longtime college-music epicenter Athens). The band was started in the mid-1990s by Kevin Barnes, and their early music is off-kilter pop with acoustic instrumentation, unpredictable melodies, and lyrics out of a weird children’s book. But the sound that’s taken over the airwaves and DSL lines in the past decade has more of a dancey bent, all bouncing beats and sinuous basslines. The harmoniously acrobatic vocals are intact, though, suggesting Lennon and McCartney doing theme music for videogames or cartoons. The artwork alone for Of Montreal’s latest album, Innocence Reaches, highlights the band’s aesthetic — it glows and vibrates like the work of Peter Max. Meow Wolf is at 1352 Rufina Circle, 505-395-6369. Doors open for the fifteen-and-over show at 8 p.m.; tickets are $25, $20 in advance from www.meowwolf.com.
