Bobby Shew is the featured musician in a jazz-quartet gig at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, at El Méson Restaurant & Tapas Bar, 213 Washington Ave. As a teenager growing up in Albuquerque, Shew played trumpet in coffeehouses, at dinner clubs, and at dances with his own band. He went on to work nationally as a member of the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and Woody Herman’s band. Later, based in Los Angeles, he played with Horace Silver, Bud Shank, Louie Bellson, Benny Goodman, and many other renowned bandleaders. Over the years, he also worked in movies and television, with Rocky, Grease, Happy Days, and Streets of San Francisco among his credits. Since moving back to Albuquerque, Shew has remained busy; he plays El Mesón with the Cal Haines Quartet: Haines on drums, Jim Ahrend on piano, and Colin Deuble on bass.
