Beyond tradition: Chris Jonas

Pasatiempo - - RANDOM ACTS - — P.W.

Chris Jon brings his new trio to Gig Performance Space on Friday, Jan. 6. According to show materials, the saxophonist — with per ussionist Will Dyar and bassist Rob Lundberg — presents 75 minutes of new compositions that “will contain elements of a classic jazz trio, but will be working with colors and sounds outside of the usual domains of traditional jazz, mixing elements that are challenging, quirky, delicate, weirdly groovy, polyphonic, and a mixture of the disjointed and melodic.” Jonas has made music with the likes of Myra Melford, Fred Ho, Anthony Braxton, and Cecil Taylor — the last two since the late 1990s. Jonas is also on the board of Braxton’s Tri-Centric Foundation and is executive director of the Santa Fe-based Littleglobe artist collective. The Friday concert begins at 7:30 p.m. at Gig (1808 Second St.). Admission is $20, and you can check out www for details about this and other upcoming gigs.
