The Mitochondriacs jazz up Gig Performance Space; The Rumelia Collective perform traditional folk songs at San Miguel Chapel; Ruth Zaporah gives an improvisational dance show at Railyard Performance Center; and Meow Wolf plays host to electronic music artists CloZee, Psymbionic, and The Chain Gang of 1974

Since the Mitochondriacs last played Gig Performance Space in March 2016, the band has expanded to a quintet. Joining percussionist Jeff Sussmann, guitarist Doug Wooldridge, bassist Jack Kotz, and pianist Casey Andersen is reedman John Gustafson. “John used to play with the funk dance band Funktuation, which was a mainstay at Club West in the 1980s,” Sussmann said. “I feel like we have a happening band, and when John joined a few months ago, we attained critical mass.” For its Friday, Feb. 3, concert, the Mitochondriacs play several tunes written by Andersen, and there will be plenty of improvisatory exploration going on. “Many people might say, ‘I’ve never heard stuff like this before,’ but I don’t think they’ll be driven away, either. The music is very challenging for all of us, but it’s not hard just to be hard: It’s very musical material.” The band plays Gig (1808 Second St.) at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $20 at the door.
