Stellar strings: Parker Quartet

Pasatiempo - - RANDOM ACTS -

Founded in 2002, the Parker Quartet has racked up an enviable résumé that includes Chamber Music America’s prestigious Cleveland Quartet Award and (since the fall of 2014) a position as artists-in-residence at Harvard University. The foursome has released a handful of highly regarded recordings, including a CD (on the Naxos label) of György Ligeti’s complete works for string quartet, which won the 2011 Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music Recording. On Friday, Feb. 24, at 7:30 p.m., the quartet appears in the Great Hall (Peterson Student Center) at St. John’s College (1160 Camino de Cruz Blanca). Their program comprises Mendelssohn’s Quartet in E-flat major (Op. 12), selections from the Capriccio of Jeremy Gill (the Parkers have recorded the complete hourlong score for Innova Records, but here they will perform a suite from the piece), and Shostakovich’s String Quartet No 3. Tickets, $20, may be had at the door. For further information, call St. John’s at 505-984-6000. — James M. Keller
