SPREAD 6.0 at SITE Santa Fe
The SITE Santa Fe-sponsored SPREAD event, first launched in 2011 to fund artists’ projects and creative initiatives, enters its latest iteration with a competitive micro-granting dinner happening on Friday, April 21. SPREAD attendees pay a sliding-scale entry fee starting at $15 per person, which includes dinner and a voting ballot. Eight finalists give short presentations on innovative projects for which they seek funding, and the artist with the most votes at the end gets the proceeds from all ticket sales.
This year’s finalists are sculpture and installation artist Paula Castillo, figurative artist Cristina González, the art collective Dry MNT, video and performance artist Erin Fussell, sculptor Jamie Hamilton, painter and installation artist Linda Swanson, book artist Erin Mickelson, and underground filmmaker Jon Moritsugu. Past SPREAD micro-grants have funded projects such as Meow Wolf art collective’s Due Return installation, artist and writer Janet Abrams’ expansion of her sculpture practice, and Axle Contemporary’s The Royal Breadshow, among other creative endeavors.
For SPREAD 6.0, SITE solicited proposals from studio artists working in New Mexico. Finalists were selected on the strength of past work and future promise. The grant can be used for ongoing projects and for the purchase of materials and supplies, rental costs, and other professional fees. The event takes place at 7 p.m. at the Santa Fe Farmers Market (1607-A Paseo de Peralta), and tickets are cash only. Tickets go on sale to the public on Thursday, April 20, at two locations: at Deep Space Coffee in Albuquerque (504 Central Ave., SW) from 5 to 6 p.m. and at 6 p.m. behind SITE (1606 Paseo de Peralta). Purchasers are allowed two tickets per person. No tickets will be sold at the door on the night of the event. Call SITE Santa Fe at 505-989-1199. — Michael Abatemarco
