Emil Bisttram (1895-1976): Waterfall 1959, Duco on Masonite
Addison Rowe Gallery, 229 E. Marcy St., 505-982-1533 In 1975 former New Mexico governor Jerry Apodaca declared April 7 to be Emil Bisttram Day. It’s the holiday that few remember except at Addison Rowe, which honors the artist’s legacy with the exhibit Emil Bisttram Day 2017, a show of paintings and drawings from throughout the Taos modernist’s career. Bisttram, a founding member of the Transcendental Painting Group with Raymond Johnson (1891-1982) and others, also started the Taos School of Art and was a cofounder of the Taos Society of Artists. The show is on view through May 20.
