2015-2016, glass

Pasatiempo - - PASA WEEK -

Jean Cocteau Cinema, 418 Montezuma Ave., 505-466-5528 Swords from G. Michael Smith’s glass series Fire Forged are featured in the solo exhibition of his sculpture Embracing Fire and Flow. “The idea with the Fire Forged swords is that it balances out and diffuses the intimidation of holding glass art,” he writes on his website. “One picks up a drinking glass from the table without hesitation. Even a thin wine glass is seldom feared. By creating an object that is crafted to be held, the wielder connects with the material at a primal level. Without fear.” Smith makes mystical-looking works, including wings, comets, and the colorful swords, using a variety of glass techniques such as blowing, casting, and kiln-forming. The exhibition opens with a 5 p.m. reception on Friday, May 5.
