Ivan Barnett: Be­yond the Sky 12 2017, pig­mented steel

Patina Gallery, 131 W. Palace Ave., 505-986-3432 Ivan Barnett, co-owner of Patina, has his first solo ex­hibit in four years. The show, In the Gar­den & Be­yond the Sky, opens with a 5 p.m. reception on Friday, May 12. Barnett’s gar­den sculp­tures of ab­stract shapes, plant, an­i­mal, and hu­man forms are made of thin-gauged ox­i­dized steel riv­eted to­gether into col­laged com­po­si­tions, coated in flat black paint, and ac­cented with bold touches of color. “The pieces are of the same ma­te­rial I have been us­ing for al­most half a cen­tury,” says the artist who is known for his folk-art-in­spired mo­biles. Barnett be­gan sculpt­ing in 1976, in­spired by the folk arts of ru­ral Penn­syl­va­nia. A por­tion of the sale of the art­work is be­ing do­nated to the Na­ture Con­ser­vancy to sup­port the Santa Fe Canyon Pre­serve.
