Chris Maynard: Firmament 2017, marabou stork feathers
Gerald Peters Gallery, 1005 Paseo de Peralta, 505-954-5700 Artist Chris Maynard uses eye-surgery tools to cut shapes from feathers and arrange them into shadowbox tableaux of birds in flight that play with shadow, light, and negative and positive space. Maynard finds the feathers at aviaries and zoos. “I want to capture an essence of life and what better way than to begin with something that already holds some of the essence I am trying to capture,” he said in a statement about the work. His solo exhibition Ascension is on view through July 22.
