A listening tour de force
This week the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival begins it 45th season, which runs from Sunday, July 16, through Aug. 21. During that span, it will present 36 mainstage concerts in town, not counting several youth recitals and a few run-out engagements in Albuquerque. The season’s repertoire includes some new or exotic pieces mixed in among much-loved classics. An especially unusual listening opportunity arrives on July 28, when the FLUX Quartet plays the String Quartet No. 2 by Morton Feldman, a work that is generally considered to be the longest in the chamber-music repertoire. On the cover is a 1976 portrait of Feldman by Betty Freeman.
