Asif Shaikh: Dancing Sparrow

William Siegal Gallery, 540 S. Guadalupe St., 505-820-3300 India-born artist Asif Shaikh has been working with embroidery since the age of seven. Shaikh hails from Ahmedabad, one of India’s largest textile centers. He is an innovator who combines traditional and contemporary styles into his embroidery, a rich tradition of which exists in India. His embroidered textiles include references to 16th- and 17th-century Mogul works, Persian miniature paintings, and other Mogul-inspired motifs. Aakansha (Aspiration), an exhibit of his textiles, opens on Monday, July 17, with a 3 p.m. reception.
