Wil­liam Sie­gal Gallery, 540 S. Guadalupe St., 505-820-3300 In­dia-born artist Asif Shaikh has been work­ing with em­broi­dery since the age of seven. Shaikh hails from Ahmed­abad, one of In­dia’s largest tex­tile cen­ters. He is an in­no­va­tor who com­bines tra­di­tional and con­tem­po­rary styles into his em­broi­dery, a rich tra­di­tion of which ex­ists in In­dia. His em­broi­dered tex­tiles in­clude ref­er­ences to 16th- and 17th-cen­tury Mogul works, Per­sian minia­ture paint­ings, and other Mogul-in­spired mo­tifs. Aakan­sha (As­pi­ra­tion), an ex­hibit of his tex­tiles, opens on Mon­day, July 17, with a 3 p.m. re­cep­tion.
