Two hands, twice: Kirill Gerstein and Jonathan Biss
Two notable pianists of the underforty generation present noontime recitals this week for the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. On Tuesday, Aug. 8, the stage belongs to Kirill Gerstein, who will play Brahms’ imposing Piano Sonata No. 2 and the First Book of Debussy’s Preludes. On Thursday, Aug. 10, it is to be occupied by Jonathan Biss, who offers three Beethoven sonatas that cover a broad span of the composer’s production: in A major (Op. 2, No. 2), from 1796; in E minor (Op. 90), from 1814; and in A-flat major (Op. 110), from 1821. Both take place in the St. Francis Auditorium (New Mexico Museum of Art, 107 W. Palace Ave.).
