Scene and heard: Santa Fe Opera Apprentice Scenes
Santa Fe Opera’s annual Apprentice Scenes programs represent great bargains for opera lovers. For $15 (just $5 for anyone 22 or under), you see complete, fully staged scenes from an array of operas featuring the highly accomplished singers aided by the backstage technical types from the company’s apprentice program. Two entirely different concerts are on offer, each consisting of eight scenes from various works, some familiar, some not. For example, the first evening, on Sunday, Aug. 13, at 8 p.m., will touch down on repertoire staples by Donizetti, Verdi, Puccini, and Ravel but will also include scenes from Prokofiev’s The Love for Three Oranges, Wagner’s Rienzi, Britten’s A
Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Paul Moravec’s The Shining. The second evening (Aug. 20) is similarly diverse, including a scene from Puccini’s rarely glimpsed early opera Edgar. Tickets for these performances on the opera house’s main stage (301 Opera Drive) can be purchased through SFO (505-986-5900; 800-280-4654; www.santafeopera.org). — J.M.K.
