Scene and heard: Santa Fe Opera Ap­pren­tice Scenes

Santa Fe Opera’s an­nual Ap­pren­tice Scenes pro­grams rep­re­sent great bar­gains for opera lovers. For $15 (just $5 for any­one 22 or un­der), you see com­plete, fully staged scenes from an ar­ray of operas fea­tur­ing the highly ac­com­plished singers aided by the back­stage tech­ni­cal types from the com­pany’s ap­pren­tice pro­gram. Two en­tirely dif­fer­ent con­certs are on of­fer, each con­sist­ing of eight scenes from var­i­ous works, some fa­mil­iar, some not. For ex­am­ple, the first evening, on Sun­day, Aug. 13, at 8 p.m., will touch down on reper­toire sta­ples by Donizetti, Verdi, Puc­cini, and Ravel but will also in­clude scenes from Prokofiev’s The Love for Three Or­anges, Wag­ner’s Rienzi, Brit­ten’s A

Mid­sum­mer Night’s Dream, and Paul Mo­ravec’s The Shin­ing. The sec­ond evening (Aug. 20) is sim­i­larly di­verse, in­clud­ing a scene from Puc­cini’s rarely glimpsed early opera Edgar.
