MY JOURNEY THROUGH FRENCH CINEMA

Pasatiempo - - MOVING IMAGES -

The talented French filmmaker Bertrand Tavernier offers a captivating primer on Gallic cinema, loosely patterned after Martin Scorsese’s odes to American and Italian filmmaking. Tavernier is a bit more idiosyncratic and personal, not really trying to cover everything but drawing upon his own memories and acquaintances, as well as experiences working for Jean-Luc Godard, Jean-Pierre Melville, and others. You don’t have to be a hardcore French film fan to enjoy the choice repartee and expert clips, but obviously, he’s mostly preaching to the choir. Not rated. 190 minutes. In French with subtitles. The Screen. (Jon Bowman)
