Nigel Conway: Going To Parades 2017, mixed media, fresco on panel
Pop Gallery, 125 Lincoln Ave., 505-820-0788 Summer was hot, but September is hotter at Pop Gallery with the exhibition September Sizzles. The show includes new abstract works by painters Nigel Conway and Coleman Mills and the jazz paintings of Clifford Bailey. Conway includes images from his series The Listeners, which feature kindhearted, empathetic characters recognizable by their pronounced lips and eyes. Mills, an avid outdoorsman, is influenced by time spent in nature and employs mnemonic devices in his abstract compositions, which deal with memory and place. Bailey’s jazz- and cinema-themed works induce nostalgia for the past with scenes inspired by nightlife of the 1920s, Universal Studios’ monsters of the ‘30s, and the art of Gustave Klimt, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Walt Disney. The show opens Friday, Sept. 1, with a reception scheduled for Sept. 30 at 5 p.m.
