Phyllis Kapp: Sunset
2007, watercolor Waxlander Gallery and Sculpture Garden, 622 Canyon Road, 505-984-2202 After turning 32 on Santa Fe’s historic Canyon Road, Waxlander Gallery closes its doors. The gallery started as owner and watercolorist Phyllis Kapp’s fifty-fifth birthday present to herself after moving to Santa Fe from Chicago. Over the years the gallery, which has remained in the same location, has expanded from a single-room studio and gallery to a 15-room space featuring works by Javier López Barbosa, Bill Sortino, and Kapp herself, in addition to a host of other artists. “It’s been an absolute joy to watch as the studio grew from those humble beginnings into the vibrant and bustling gallery that so many artists called home,” she said in a statement. The gallery’s last day of business is Friday, Oct. 13.
