Elle Marja, a teenage rein­deer breeder of the Sami peo­ple, is sent to board­ing school with her sis­ter when their mother can­not af­ford to care for them any­more. At school, she ex­pe­ri­ences racism and forced as­sim­i­la­tion sim­i­lar to that faced by Na­tive Amer­i­can chil­dren in the early part of the 20th cen­tury, in­clud­ing be­ing for­bid­den to speak her lan­guage and un­der­go­ing hu­mil­i­at­ing pub­lic med­i­cal ex­am­i­na­tions. Elle Marja finds a tal­ent for fol­low­ing teach­ers’ in­struc­tions and soon longs to shed her Sami iden­tity and fit into Swedish so­ci­ety. This means aban­don­ing her tra­di­tional dress and steal­ing mod­ern fash­ion­able clothes — and that’s just the be­gin­ning of the ac­tions she takes. She stum­bles many times along the way as she learns to hide who she re­ally is; she also alien­ates her fam­ily, an act with in­ter­gen­er­a­tional
