Distant sounds: Derek Gripper
Derek Gripper, who plays Gig Performance Space on Thursday, Feb. 8, specializes in a transcendent blend of Western classical music and African folk music. Born in South Africa, Gripper was playing bass guitar in Cape Town clubs by age sixteen. During the next two decades, he played guitar and viola in a South African ensemble, studied Carnatic music in India, honed his skills playing J.S. Bach, and immersed himself in the music of Toumani Diabaté and other Malian kora players, whose music he has adapted on One Night on Earth (2012) and Libraries of Fire (2015). The concert at Gig (1808 Second St.) begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $17 in advance; visit www.gigsantafe.com. It’s $22 at the door.
