Derek Grip­per, who plays Gig Per­for­mance Space on Thurs­day, Feb. 8, spe­cial­izes in a tran­scen­dent blend of Western clas­si­cal mu­sic and African folk mu­sic. Born in South Africa, Grip­per was play­ing bass gui­tar in Cape Town clubs by age six­teen. Dur­ing the next two decades, he played gui­tar and vi­ola in a South African ensem­ble, stud­ied Car­natic mu­sic in India, honed his skills play­ing J.S. Bach, and im­mersed him­self in the mu­sic of Toumani Di­a­baté and other Malian kora play­ers, whose mu­sic he has adapted on One Night on Earth (2012) and Li­braries of Fire (2015).
