John Gibson: Canyon 2018, watercolor on paper
Gerald Peters Gallery, 1005 Paseo de Peralta, 505-954-5700 Known for his evocative, illusionistic still lifes of marble-like spheres, painter John Gibson invests each composition with a unique personality. His long fascination with spherical forms amounts to a study of one of the most basic and universal of shapes. “I paint balls because they are the most simple and fundamentally different thing from the flat surface of a painting I can think of,” he said in a recent statement. An exhibition of his new works includes oil paintings as well as examples of his recent forays into watercolor painting. The show opens Friday, Oct. 5, and is on view through Dec. 8. There is no reception.
