Sam Devlin had brought our first Sock­eye to the Boats Afloat Show in Seat­tle. It was the first year for TrawlerPort. Months be­fore, I had given Sam a sub­scrip­tion to the mag­a­zine as a gift, feel­ing the mag­a­zine ad­dressed the same au­di­ence he was find­ing that led to the de­sign of the Sock­eye. Pas­sage­Maker’s au­di­ence was a nat­u­ral fit with Sam’s de­signs and Sam agreed. The day be­fore the show I was de­tail­ing our boat when I saw Bob Lane and Bill Par­la­tore talk­ing at the stern of our Sock­eye 42. I had read ev­ery word of ev­ery is­sue for the first sev­eral years and rec­og­nized Bob from pic­tures in the mag­a­zine. I rein­tro­duced my­self to Bill from our meet­ing years be­fore in Annapolis, and now I had the link from my first is­sue bought at the World Trade Cen­ter book­store that had even­tu­ally led me to this new life and new job as a boat­builder.
