Sam Devlin had brought our first Sockeye to the Boats Afloat Show in Seattle. It was the first year for TrawlerPort. Months before, I had given Sam a subscription to the magazine as a gift, feeling the magazine addressed the same audience he was finding that led to the design of the Sockeye. PassageMaker’s audience was a natural fit with Sam’s designs and Sam agreed. The day before the show I was detailing our boat when I saw Bob Lane and Bill Parlatore talking at the stern of our Sockeye 42. I had read every word of every issue for the first several years and recognized Bob from pictures in the magazine. I reintroduced myself to Bill from our meeting years before in Annapolis, and now I had the link from my first issue bought at the World Trade Center bookstore that had eventually led me to this new life and new job as a boatbuilder.
