BLACKSTONE VALLEY MEMORIES
1967 Fred Duffy paced Pawtucket West with 16 points as
the Rangers whipped Woonsocket 63-46 while holding Class B scoring leader Tom Asselin, the Villa Novans 6-4 pivot ace, to 13 points in an afternoon tilt at the West gym. A fight between two youthful fans broke out immediately upon completion of the game and it took the best efforts of two Pawtucket police officers to break it up and calm down one of the combatants. Reason for shifting the game to the afternoon was to avoid a rumored “rumble” which would have involved followers of four schools.
Kris Sullivan and Alison Murray picked up the scoring pace in the second quarter as Saint Raphael Academy snapped a seven-game losing streak by downing Mount Pleasant 40-20 in a Class B-North contest. Nicole Piche collected the bulk of her game-high 14 points in the second half to help put the victory on ice. “We had good team play and we disrupted them with our press which set up a lot of steals and baskets,” said SRA coach Art Mitsmenn.
Jeff Xavier closed with 25 points, five steals and two blocked shots to lead the St. Teresa’s Midget A quintet to a 48-38 win over St. Joseph’s moving the victors to 8-1 overall. Other top players for St. Teresa included Corey Martin (10 points, two treys), Kyle Lister (four points, four rebounds) and Chris Collins (four points, six caroms). St. Joe’s was led by Mike McParlin who caged 13 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, dished out eight assists, had two steals and blocked two shots and Matt Bobola netted 11 points and hauled down nine rebounds, while Tony Goncalves and P. J. Kudzeba collected four points and six caroms each.
