Fi­nally re­leased in 2007 af­ter years of va­por­ware ac­cu­sa­tions as part of Valve’s cel­e­brated Orange

Box, TeamFortress2 is mem­o­rable for sev­eral rea­sons. Firstly, it’s a well-tuned, creative mul­ti­player shooter, its classes wicked respins of ’60s spy and ac­tion movie archetypes. Se­condly, it is a high wa­ter­mark for ni­hilis­tic (yet misog­y­nis­tic) hu­mor in videogames. Thirdly, its car­toon style tacks hard against the games in­dus­try’s peren­nial fix­a­tion with gloomy pho­to­re­al­is­tic set­tings. There is no grit, clut­ter, or ex­cess shadow in TF2’ s hec­tic car­toon-style world. And fourthly, it would en­joy enor­mous longevity, thanks to a bar­rage of updates and the de­ci­sion to go free-to-play in 2011. Its great­est de­scen­dant is prob­a­bly Overwatch.
