Katlyn McElhinny, a seventh-grade student at West Mifflin Area Middle School, is tops among the 134,995 students in the nation who competed in the Study Island spring contest.

It marks the second time Katlyn was a national winner. She also was tops in the Study Island fall competition, Brian Plichta, West Mifflin Middle School principal, said.

Study Island is an online enrichment program for math and English skills that has been used by the West Mifflin Area district for the past several years, Mr. Plichta said.

In addition to Katlyn’s success, which earned her a $100 gift card for Amazon, the middle school was ranked first among 723 schools nationwide that competed and was named to “The Elite 20” because 20 or more of its students were in the top 100 scorers. In addition, the school had 50 students in the top 200. Schoolwide, 421 middle school students participated.

“I am extremely proud of our students, staff and parents for encouraging the students to compete online. We had so many students log on and do their absolute best and much of this work was done outside of school,” Mr. Plichta said.
