Cultural Trust wins grant for Downtown project
Major residential development eyed
The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust has secured key funding in its ambitious bid to create a major residential development Downtown between Penn Avenue and the AlleghenyRiver.
Cultural Trust officials have been awarded a $516,660 state grant and a $774,990 state loan to help pay for the demolition of the former Duff’s Business Institute building at the corner of Ninth Street and FortDuquesne Boulevard.
Kevin McMahon, Cultural Trust president and CEO, called the funding, announced Tuesday by state Sen. Wayne Fontana a “huge step forward” for the development — one that could eventually clear the way for construction of a new residential tower at the corner.
“It allows us to take the next big steps in terms of planning for the next several phases of the block. As I said before, the building is there. We need to make the site ready for future development. This is going to allow us to do that,” he said.
