Cul­tural Trust wins grant for Down­town pro­ject

Ma­jor res­i­den­tial de­vel­op­ment eyed

The Pitts­burgh Cul­tural Trust has se­cured key fund­ing in its am­bi­tious bid to cre­ate a ma­jor res­i­den­tial de­vel­op­ment Down­town be­tween Penn Av­enue and the Al­leghenyRiver.

Cul­tural Trust of­fi­cials have been awarded a $516,660 state grant and a $774,990 state loan to help pay for the de­mo­li­tion of the for­mer Duff’s Busi­ness In­sti­tute build­ing at the cor­ner of Ninth Street and FortDuquesne Boule­vard.

Kevin McMa­hon, Cul­tural Trust pres­i­dent and CEO, called the fund­ing, an­nounced Tues­day by state Sen. Wayne Fon­tana a “huge step for­ward” for the de­vel­op­ment — one that could even­tu­ally clear the way for con­struc­tion of a new res­i­den­tial tower at the cor­ner.

“It al­lows us to take the next big steps in terms of plan­ning for the next sev­eral phases of the block. As I said be­fore, the build­ing is there. We need to make the site ready for fu­ture de­vel­op­ment. This is go­ing to al­low us to do that,” he said.
