Get the scoop on new mint, honey ice creams

- By Arthi Subramaniam

Choolaah Mint Yogurt icecream, the love child of a savory Indian sauce and a sweet creamy ice cream, will make its debut Friday fora limited time.

East Liberty residents Millie’s Homemade Ice Cream and Choolah Indian BBQ have teamed up to come out with the new yogurt ice cream. “We were inspiredby Choolah’s mintyogurt sauce, which is a delicious condiment,” says Millie’s owner, Chad Townsend.

The yogurt-cream-based ice cream is very different from Millie’s mint-chocolate chip ice cream, which is perfumed with peppermint oil. You have to really like fresh English mint to hang out with the new ice cream, as it is packed with loads of the aromatic herb that is pureed and combined with Naturi, an organic Greek yogurt that was co-created by Carnegie Mellon University grads using cream, eggs, sugar and salt.

Speckledwith tiny bits of mint, the creamy green treat is smooth and leaves a refreshing cool minty flavor after each lick.

The ice cream will be available only for three days. From 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, Millie’s will scoop free servings from its ice cream truck in front of Choolahat 6114 Centre Ave. OnSaturday and Sunday, it will be available at the Shadyside shop at 232 South Highland Ave., by paid scoops and the pint ($7.99).

Mr. Townsend also is teaming up with The Porch at Siena (Upper St. Clair) and The Porch at Schenley (Oakland) to launch the Chocolate Beehive ice cream made with honey harvested from the rooftop hives at Schenley, along with chocolate, black walnutsand cardamom..

The ice cream will be available at both places starting today. The Porch will release its summer menu, which includes garden salad made with black beans, corn and avocado and barbecue chicken pizza, on June 14 at Schenley and June 21 at Siena.
