Landslides close parts of Great Allegheny Passage

-

Recent storms caused landslides that have closed partsof the Great Allegheny Passage trail in Elizabeth Township, McKee sport and Fayette County.

Bryan Perry, executive director of the Allegheny Trail Alliance, said Tuesday that the landslides occurred between Sunday night and 8 a.m Monday.

The trail between mile markers123 through 124 in Elizabeth Township is closed until further notice. A 4-mile detour uses Twele Road, Robin Road, Greenock-Buena Vista Road and Styche Street to connect to the trailhead in Buena Vista.

In Fayette County, a slide is blocking the trail between mile markers 96 and 97. Mr. Perry said there is no “easy detour. ”The Yough River Bike Trail Council and Whitsett-Fayette Yough Trail Council were working to clear the trail.

The McKeesport slide is near mile 129, adjacent to Dead Man’s Hollow. Mr. Perry said that slide is passable on foot.

Repair updates will be posted to gaptrail.org and the trail’s Facebook page. The 150-mile trail stretches from Pittsburgh to Cumberland, Md.
