TEMPLE over Massachusetts by 16
We expected a significant drop off in success for the Owls this season after former head coach Matt Rhule (20-8 SU last two years) bolted for a bigger payday at Baylor. And that’s what has happened, with Notre Dame shredding a quality Temple defense for 422 rushing yards in a 49-16 Week One destruction, followed by the Owls needing a 49-yard FG with one minute remaining to edge Villanova, 16-13, last week. Ditto for the Minutemen, choking away a 4th quarter lead to lose their home opener to Hawaii, falling by 10 points at Coastal Carolina in Game Two, and scoring only 7 points in last week’s home loss to Old Dominion to complete the hat trick. With both teams off to a slow start, remember that new Temple HC Geoff Collins is the only coach to be a Broyles award nominee for the nation’s top assistant coach – at three schools. In other words, the guy can flat-out coach, and he’ll have the Owls back on track before season’s end. However, the jury is still out on UMass leader Mark Whipple, whose career with the Minutemen may be going the way of the Charmin TV ads featuring Mr. Whipple. His current 0-3 SUATS start, and an ugly failure in his team’s last 10 games when seeking revenge, finds Temple putting the ‘squeeze’ on Whipple’s boys tonight.
