Tcu over SMU by 20

After last week’s dreadful debut at SMU for new head coach Sonny Dykes, tonight’s game could quite possibly post the lowest viewer ratings since FOX tried to reboot The Exorcist as a series (who bankrolled that idea?). It was bad enough that Dykes’ air-raid offense never got out of the shelter – falling behind 36-0 before scoring all 23 of its points in the closing 8-plus minutes of the rout – but it was the latest version of the horrible defenses that have plagued Dykes throughout this coaching career that had heads shaking on the Mustangs sideline. This year’s ‘stop-unit’ gave up 46 points, allowed North Texas QB Mason Fine to connect on 40-of-50 passes for 444 yards and 3 TDs, and trailed in the first down battle, 27-1 (yes, that’s ONE) before the SMU offense briefly came to life. Yikes, indeed. While Sonny Boy appears to be outclassed in this coaching matchup with his 1-6 ATS mark as a double-digit home dog, TCU’s Gary Patterson owns a surprisingly weak 12-18 ATS record as double-digit road chalk (9-16 ATS laying -14 or more). And though TCU has won 16 out of the last 18 meetings in this alphabet rivalry since 1999, the Horned Frogs have slipped to just 5-10 ATS since 2002. Our database tells us SMU’s Dykes inherits a program that’s gone 0-4 SU on this field as a series host of late, not to mention a disturbing 4-11 ATS run in home openers. But there are two BIG reasons we’re not getting involved in what looks to be a Horned Frog runaway here. One, TCU has Ohio State on deck and we know HC Patterson will not put his complete playbook on display to the Buckeyes tonight, no matter how tempting. And Two, this is above all a rivalry game between Forth Worth and Dallas, and hatefests like this usually bring out the best in underdogs. Even though it looks like Dykes will need Father Merrin and every scripture-spouting cleric in Texas to keep his head from spinning right off his body, we’re not laying this kind of wood with the Buckeyes lurking near the burn pile. Neither should you. Saturday, September 8
