FLA ATLANTIC over Air Force by 6
For the 12th straight year under HC Troy Calhoun, the Force opened its season by taking on an FCS foe in an unlined game. And much like the previous 11 seasons where the Flyboys opened with an average win margin of 37.6 points, Calhoun’s squad stuck to the formula with a 38-0 whitewash of Stony Brook (10-3 in 2017). Meanwhile, FAU head coach Lane Kiffin’s trademark smirk was nowhere to be seen at Oklahoma last Saturday as his Owls were reduced to road kill in a 63-14 smashing by the Sooners Schooner. Even worse, the Florida Atlantic alumni sent out a celebratory fund-raising tweet announcing that they had just defeated the Sooners. Talk about a double dose of egg on the face! We’re eager to see how the Air Force defense fares today against the embarrassed Owls, especially after giving up a crippling 5.9 yards per rush last year and holding the Seawolves to just 75 total yards in last week’s 38-point win. Remember, Navy torpedoed the Owls, 42-19, with their triple option ground attack last season and the Force looked in mid-season form last Saturday, piling up 333 rushing yards. Plus, coach Calhoun owns a respectable 19-9 ATS ledger when coming off a win in non-conference clashes. The bottom line is we can’t lay points with team that just coughed up 650 yards and 63 points in a lopsided loss, not with military teams a convincing 117-85-4 ATS as double-digit road dogs. It what looks to be a hot one weatherwise in Boca Raton (2:00 pm start), we’ll lean slightly to the high-altitude jet jockeys.
