MINNESOTA over Miami Ohio by 11
The RedHawks laid an egg for the second straight game in a 21-0 shutout loss to Cincinnati last week. However, for those who like the glass halffull, consider that 0-2 college football teams coming off consecutive SU favorite loses to open the season are 15-6 ATS in Game Three of the campaign when facing a non-conference foe. Meanwhile, Minnesota HC P.J. Fleck has his crew rowing the boat once again, off to a 2-0 SUATS start. Now on the third leg of a season-opening 3-game homestand, the Gophers are currently 8-1 SU and 5-1 ATS in this role. The question is whether or not any value remains with Minny hot and Miami not. Sorry, but we’re not willing to pay the price to find out, especially since star RB Rodney Smith is out for the season after suffering a knee injury early in the victory over Fresno State. Smith was one of just three seniors on the Gopher offense, and with freshman walk-on QB Zack Annexstad calling signals, the loss of the popular and experienced leader will really hurt. Fleck said the school will seek a medical hardship waiver in order to get a sixth year of eligibility for the senior. Minny is a very young yet promising team this season, but we’ll have to see how the Gophers respond to this devastating loss.
