On page 70, contributing editor Sarah Scoles checks out a 2-foot-tall instrument and its potential for a very big mission; the microscope, known as Shamu, might someday visit the Jovian moon of Europa. Scoles is no newbie to the galactic beat: Her previous features for the magazine include one on space-weather forecasting and another exploring the impact of the aerospace industry on a small U.S. town. Her 2017 book, Making Contact, centers on Jill Tarter, a key figure in the scientific search for extraterrestrial intelligence.
