Light re­flect­ing off flat sur­faces like the ocean can os­cil­late hor­i­zon­tally, cre­at­ing glare in sit­u­a­tions where sun­glasses mat­ter most. When stretched thin, a layer of polyvinyl al­co­hol cre­ates a molec­u­lar struc­ture that al­lows only ver­ti­cally os­cil­lat­ing light to pass through, can­cel­ing out harsh rays.
