Grown in vats of yeast and spun into strands by a ma­chine, these light, and arach­nid­strong, in­spired threads fi­nally hit the mar­ket. A lim­ited-edi­tion run of ties marked the first com­mer­cially avail­able syn­thetic spi­der-silk cloth­ing. Even­tu­ally these pro­tein-based fibers could be a re­new­able al­ter­na­tive to the petroleum-de­rived fab­rics that dom­i­nate more than 65 per­cent of the world’s tex­tile mar­ket.
