Grown in vats of yeast and spun into strands by a machine, these light, and arachnidstrong, inspired threads finally hit the market. A limited-edition run of ties marked the first commercially available synthetic spider-silk clothing. Eventually these protein-based fibers could be a renewable alternative to the petroleum-derived fabrics that dominate more than 65 percent of the world’s textile market.
