Eight people in one vehicle suffered minor injuries Tuesday afternoon in a two-vehicle collision at Olive Avenue and Villa Street.

Porterville Police Capt. John Hall said a Nissan Altima with eight people inside was westbound on Olive Avenue when it was broadsided by a Chevy Traverse which was southbound on Villa. Police were still trying to determine which driver had the right of way.

The collision sent the Altima into the medium island, knocking down the small signal light there. The vehicle came to rest in the inside lane, partially on the island.

Olive and Villa were both closed for nearly an hour as firefighters and medical personnel tended to the injured. A young woman in the Traverse also was checked out, but not taken to the hospital. All eight in the Altima were taken to the hospital as a precaution.

“All were minor injuries,” said Sgt. Mark Knox. “They just were shook up.” Included among the injured were several small children and at least two adults.

The Altima had severe damage and its back window was completely broken. An off-duty police officer was one of the first on the scene and used his private vehicle to block traffic from running into the Altima.
