Celebrating 40 years of the Zalud House Museum

-

AsI mentioned back in February, we are proud to mark 40 years of the Zalud House Museum being open in our community. The house is a nostalgic glimpse into the past that preserves the legacy of the family and the early history of Porterville pioneers. We invite you to join us at an anniversary celebration on May 6 from 12-2 p.m. We will have a ceremony, refreshments, special-era music on the family’s original piano and house tours. The Zalud House was built in 1891 and is one of few homes from that era that has not undergone any remodeling and one of few museums in the nation that is furnished entirely with the owners’ original possessions. It is listed on the National Historical Registry of Old Houses and the National Register of Historic Places. Swim Lesson Registration Summer is right around the corner and the City Pool in Murry Park is set to open Memorial Day Weekend, May 2729. Be sure your child is water safe by letting us help them learn how to swim the right way, right from the beginning. We offer structured swim lessons that are divided by age and skill level and taught by Red Cross certified instructors at the City Pool. Classes are available for all ages and abilities beginning with water babies and going all the way through competitive strokes and diving. Classes meet Monday through Friday in two-week sessions beginning in June. You can register your child online or at the Heritage Center for a low cost of $36 per session.

Summer Day Camp If you are looking for a way to curb your child’s boredom this summer or aren’t sure where you are going to leave them when you have to work, let us help. We are offering a Summer Day Camp that is sure to provide your kids with adventure and tons of fun. Campers meet each day at the Heritage Center and our staff will lead them in a wide variety of activities, including arts and crafts, games, skits and songs, sports and swimming at the City Pool. It runs Monday through Friday from 7:305:30 p.m. and is designed for ages 5-12. Day Camp sessions start June 12 and continue until the week of July 31. Cost is $85 per week which includes lunch and an afternoon snack. If your child wants to try it out, there are also halfday and daily drop-in fee options available if space permits.

Youth Volleyball Our youth volleyball league begins registration on Monday. The goal of this league, and all of our youth sports programs, is to develop fundamentals, character and sportsmanship and foster a positive, pressure-free environment without putting too much stress on the outcome of the game. It is designed for grades 4-8. Practices will take place on weekdays beginning in June with games played on Saturdays starting in July. The cost of the league is $46. Save some time and register online or visit the Heritage Center. Space is limited. Coaches needed.

Junior Giants We are proud to announce the return of the Junior Giants Baseball league this summer. The Junior Giants, a flagship program of the San Francisco Giants Community Fund, is a free, non-competitive baseball league for boys and girls ages 5-13. The Junior Giants use baseball as a forum to encourage young people and their families to live healthy productive lives. To get your child involved, register online at jrgiants.org starting at 9 a.m. on May 8. Space is limited for this incredible program so early registration is advised. Registration includes a uniform Tshirt and hat, eight games, plus other incentives. Practices begin in June and games are played in July at the Porterville Sports Complex.
