Illinois woman killed in Toll Road crash
Police said an Illinois woman may have been using her mobile phone Tuesday when she was killed in a crash on the Indiana Toll Road.
Emma Beth Pincus Hartman, 18, of Glenview, Illinois, was eastbound in a 2004 Jeep Liberty on Interstate 80/90 just east of the Indiana/Illinois state line on the Indiana Toll Road when she left the roadway. The Jeep crossed over the median onto the westbound side of the toll road and was hit on the driver’s side in the far right lane by a semitrailer.
Hartman may have been texting or reading a text on her mobile phone, according to a news release from the Indiana State Police.
The semitrailer, owned by Advantage Transportation, Salt Lake City, Utah, was loaded with liquor. The driver, Joseph Kelly Jr., 66, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, was not injured. Police said Kelly was in the far right lane and could not avoid the Jeep. Kelly was not injured.
Hartman had to be extricated from the Jeep and was pronounced dead at the scene by a deputy with the Lake County coroner’s office.
All lanes reopened at approximately 3 p.m.
