Nuts for Water

PS Magazine - - POP CULTURE, NEWS, AND EVENTS FROM PAST DECADES -

Nuts use a whole lot of water. It takes about a gallon of water to grow one almond, and nearly five gallons to grow one walnut. Almond farming has almost doubled in the past ten years with the average American now eating two pounds per year. Almonds are California’s top agricultural export. The state produces 80% of the world’s almonds and 43% of the world’s walnuts.
