Restau­rant owner Robert Cobb cre­ated the epony­mous Cobb Salad at his fa­mous eatery, The Brown Derby, in Hol­ly­wood, Cal­i­for­nia. Le­gend has it that Mr. Cobb cre­ated the salad as a mid­night snack us­ing what he could find in the fridge. Au­thor Mar­garet Mitchell’s epic 1,037-page best- sell­ing novel, Gone with the Wind, about the life of South­ern belle Scar­lett O’Hara dur­ing and af­ter the Civil War, was pub­lished and sold for $3.
