Pupervisors seek funding fortobc
Journal Register News Service Last month the Warminster Board of Supervisors approved the release of the current Warminster Recreation Center Building to its former owner, Centennial School District. Now the township is looking for funds to build a new home for WREC.
The board approved an agreement with Milligan and Company, an acFRunWLnJ firP, WR SrHSDrH WKH EusLnHss plan for the application for the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program grant, which, if granted, would supply $1.76 million to the township for the building of a new WREC.
The new 10,000-square-foot, building would be built in Warminster Community Park and would be constructed if the funding is secured next year,
“We’re looking forward toward moving forward with this,” said Supervisor Mark Mchee.
The current WREC was an elementary school until Centennial School District sold the property to the township for $1 in 1988. The building houses not only the township’s parks and recreation department, but also other tenants such as Head Start and Time for Tots Child Development, among others. Some of the tenants moved to the now closed Leary Elementary School over the past year and the park’s department has been losing rent revenue.
Because of the certain clauses in the original agreement between the school district and the township, Warminster faced restrictions in terms of the building use. The township also encountered a possibility of the school district taking the building back at any time, so Warminster did not do any renovations to the 60-year-old building.
$FFRrGLnJ WR WRwnsKLS RIfiFLDOs the upkeep and the renovations the building needs are out of the township means as it costs about $134,000 annually to maintain the building, so even if Warminster took full ownership of the building it would face diffiFuOWLHs PDLnWDLnLnJ LW.
$FFRrGLnJ WR RIfiFLDO rHSRrWs DERuW 15,000 visit the WREC annually.
