A rec­tan­gles

• 8 as­sorted 21/2" x 61/2" solid B rec­tan­gles

3/8 yard white solid

3/8 yard dark brown solid 2 bat­ting rec­tan­gles to size 2 back­ing rec­tan­gles to size Thread

Ba­sic sew­ing tools and sup­plies • • • • • •

CUT­TING

From white solid:

• Cut 1 (61/2" by fabric width) strip. Sub­cut strip into 8 each 11/2" x 61/2" C rec­tan­gles and 21/2" x 61/2" D rec­tan­gles.

• Cut 1 (31/2" by fabric width) strip. Sub­cut strip into 2 (31/2" x 121/2")

E strips.

From dark brown solid:

• Cut 4 (21/4" by fabric width)

bind­ing strips.

COM­PLET­ING THE RUN­NER

1. Ar­range and join four each B and C rec­tan­gles to make a B-C strip as shown in Fig­ure 1; press. Re­peat to make a sec­ond B-C strip. 2. Ar­range and join four each A and D rec­tan­gles to make an A-D strip as shown in Fig­ure 2; press. Re­peat to make a sec­ond A-D strip. 3. Ar­range and join one each A-D and B-C strip to make a pieced sec­tion re­fer­ring to the As­sem­bly Di­a­gram; press.

4. Add E to the B-D end of the pieced sec­tion to com­plete one place mat top; press.

5. Cre­ate a quilt sand­wich re­fer­ring to Quilt­ing Basics on page 110.

6. Quilt as de­sired.

7. Bind edges re­fer­ring to Quilt­ing Basics on page 110 to fin­ish.

8. Re­peat steps 3–7 to com­plete a sec­ond place mat.
