• 24 (21/2" by fab­ric width) pre­cut strips or 24 (10") pre­cut squares or 21/4 yards to­tal as­sorted prints* • 5/ 8 yard co­or­di­nat­ing di­ag­o­nal stripe* • 7/ 8 yard red flo­ral* • 11/ 8 yards red tonal* • Back­ing to size* • Bat­ting to size • Thread • Ba­sic sewing tools and sup­plies *April Show­ers fab­ric col­lec­tion from Moda; Ther­more bat­ting from Hobbs used to make sam­ple.

CUT­TING

From as­sorted prints: • Cut 24 (21/2" by fab­ric width) strips from yardage or use pre­cut 21/2" strips or use (10") squares.

Sub­cut 96 (21/2" x 81/2") A rec­tan­gles. From co­or­di­nat­ing di­ag­o­nal stripe: • Cut 2 (41/2" by fab­ric width) B strips. • Cut 5 (11/2" by fab­ric width) F/G strips. From red flo­ral: • Cut 6 (41/2" by fab­ric width) H/I strips. From red tonal: • Cut 2 (41/2" by fab­ric width) C strips. • Cut 5 (11/2" by fab­ric width) D/E strips. • Cut 6 (21/4" by fab­ric width) bind­ing strips.

COM­PLET­ING BLOCKS

1. Se­lect and join four dif­fer­ent-print A rec­tan­gles along the 81/2" sides to com­plete one Rail Fence block re­fer­ring to the block draw­ing; press seams to one side. 2. Re­peat step 1 to com­plete a to­tal of 24 Rail Fence blocks.

COM­PLET­ING THE QUILT

1. Sew a B strip to a C strip with right sides to­gether along length to make a B-C strip set; press seam to­ward B. Re­peat to make a sec­ond B-C strip set. 2. Sub­cut the B-C strip sets into 30 (21/2" x 81/2") B-C seg­ments as shown in Fig­ure 1. 3. Se­lect and join six B-C units to make a sash­ing strip re­fer­ring to the Assem­bly Di­a­gram; press seams to­ward C. Re­peat to make a to­tal of five sash­ing strips. 4. Se­lect and join six Rail Fence blocks to make a ver­ti­cal block row re­fer­ring to the Assem­bly Di­a­gram for po­si­tion­ing of blocks; press seams to­ward the un­pieced block edges. Re­peat to make a to­tal of four ver­ti­cal block rows. 5. To com­plete the quilt cen­ter, join the block rows with the sash­ing rows, begin­ning and end­ing with a sash­ing row; press. 6. Join the D/E strips on the short ends to make a long strip; press. Sub­cut strip into two strips each 11/2" x 481/2" D and 11/2" x 441/2" E. 7. Sew D strips to op­po­site long edges and E strips to the top and bot­tom of the quilt cen­ter; press seams to­ward D and E strips. 8. Join the F/G strips on the short ends to make a long strip; press. Sub­cut strip into two strips each 11/2" x 501/2" F and 11/2" x 461/2" G. 9. Sew F strips to op­po­site long edges and G strips to the top and bot­tom of the quilt cen­ter; press seams to­ward F and G strips. 10. Join the H/I strips on the short ends to make a long strip; press. Sub­cut strip into two strips each 41/2" x 521/2" H and 41/2" x 541/2" I. 11. Sew H strips to op­po­site long edges and I strips to the top and bot­tom of the quilt cen­ter to com­plete the quilt top; press seams to­ward H and I strips. 12. Cre­ate a quilt sand­wich re­fer­ring to Quilt­ing Ba­sics on page 126. 13. Quilt as de­sired. 14. Bind re­fer­ring to Quilt­ing Ba­sics on page 126 to fin­ish.
